What is a General X-Ray?

X-rays are used to image almost any part of the body. They are the most common and most widely available examinations we offer.

All of our practices employ state-of-the art computerised and digital imaging equipment to ensure maximum image quality and minimum radiation dose.

What preparation is required?

No appointment is necessary for an X-Ray. However, it’s best to call ahead as during busy periods, there may be a short wait. There is no preparation needed and there are no after effects.

We may ask you to remove your hairclips, earrings, pins, chains or other items of jewellery before the examination, as these can sometimes interfere with the X-Ray. We may also need you to change into a gown, depending on the type of examination being performed.

What should I bring?

Please be sure to bring along any previous X-Rays, CT scans, ultrasound or MRI examinations which you may have available. These films can often provide valuable additional information to the attending Radiologist when your X-Ray is reported. All films are your property and will be returned to you.

Also, please bring your request form from your doctor which instructs us as to why the X-Ray has been requested.

How long does it take?

An x-ray examination can take from 5 – 20 minutes to complete depending of the examination requested. You may be required to move into different positions. Some require you to lie on the bed, others are taken standing up.

The radiographer will explain the procedure to you and patients may be asked to hold your breath for each X-Ray.

Is the radiation safe?

The radiation exposure during an x-ray is very low and we take every precaution to ensure this dose is minimised. If you know you are or think you may be pregnant, you must tell your referring doctor and the Radiographer performing your examination.
